Signed and notarised. Apple has notarised this Mac preview.

Download for Mac

Version 0.1.35 · 130 MiB · SHA-256 checksums

Install on macOS
  1. Download and open the ZIP.
  2. Quit any running copy of KithMoot, then move KithMoot.app into your Applications folder.
  3. Open KithMoot and approve the usual first-launch prompt. You may need to grant screen-recording permission again when upgrading from an older preview.

Signed Mac releases download quietly and wait until you approve a restart; calls, shares, uploads and unsent work block that restart. Your desktop login is separate from your browser login.

Windows · portable preview

Windows 10 or 11 x64

Extract the whole ZIP and open KithMoot.exe. Keep the folder together. Updates are manual and your local profile remains under your Windows account.

Unsigned preview. Windows may show an unknown-publisher warning or refuse it under local security policy. A clean-machine Windows call and screen-share check remains outstanding.

Android · 0.6.31

Your chats and rooms on your phone.

For Android 13 or later. New messages arrive as notifications even with KithMoot closed, with a Reply you can send from the notification. Calls ring like a phone call, and your rooms follow your account from your other devices.

Production-key signed · Checksum and signing details

Install or update
  1. Open the downloaded APK and choose Install, or Update over an earlier version. Do not uninstall first: updating keeps your account and rooms.
  2. Sign in with the same Nostr account you use elsewhere.

A direct download, not a Play Store listing. Android 8 to 12 cannot install it; the older 0.5.12 preview still works there, without the newer sync and call improvements.

What's new in 0.6.31
  • New in 0.6.31: the new KithMoot icon, the turquoise and blue vortex on white. Nothing else changes.
  • From 0.6.30: a message shows as a notification as it arrives, with who sent it and what they said. Reply from the notification, or tap to open the conversation at the latest message.
  • A camera that stayed on Connecting video after someone switched it mid-call now shows.
  • A room joined on another device opens here, and a group link whose relays lost its invitation is found on yours.
  • Alone on a call, one short line replaces the invite card; a private conversation offers no link at all.

Download .deb for ARM64

Version 0.1.34 · 88 MiB · SHA-256 checksums

Install the .deb package
  1. Open the downloaded package with your software installer, or in a terminal in your Downloads folder run sudo apt install ./kithmoot_0.1.34_amd64.deb (or the arm64 file).
  2. Open KithMoot from your applications menu.

Installing it adds KithMoot's signed software source, so new versions arrive with your usual system updates. If KithMoot is open when one arrives, it offers a restart, and waits while you are on a call. Your profile in ~/.config/KithMoot is never touched: not by updates, and not by removing the package. Moving over from the tar.gz install keeps it too.

Works on Debian 12 and later and Ubuntu 22.04 and later, and the distributions built on them.

Add the software source yourself

To install through apt without downloading the package first:

sudo wget -qO /etc/apt/sources.list.d/kithmoot.sources https://github.com/forgesworn/kithmoot/releases/download/apt/kithmoot.sources
sudo apt update && sudo apt install kithmoot

The source file carries the key the repository is signed with, the KithMoot archive key, fingerprint D6D7 B42A 6909 85CC 3DDC C676 F546 951E DCB5 E0DC. It is served from the project's GitHub releases.

Download .tar.gz for ARM64

Version 0.1.34 · 126 MiB

Install from the tar.gz
  1. Extract the downloaded tar.gz archive.
  2. Open a terminal in the extracted KithMoot folder.
  3. Quit KithMoot if it is running, then run python3 install.py.
  4. Open KithMoot from your applications menu.

The installer runs as your own user, without sudo. It installs under your user data directory and adds a menu entry. Run the new version's installer to update; your profile is preserved.

Requires Python 3, a current glibc-based desktop with GTK 3, NSS and ALSA libraries, and permission to use unprivileged user namespaces. Some distributions restrict these; ask your administrator if the sandbox prevents startup.

Share Area works on X11 with the movable crop frame, and on Wayland through a preview: choose a screen, drag a box around what to share, and only that box is sent. Linux system audio is not captured. The Wayland screen chooser and physical X11, GNOME and KDE checks remain outstanding.

Going back a version keeps your profile, but an older version may not read everything a newer one saved. On Debian or Ubuntu, install an older package with sudo apt install --allow-downgrades ./kithmoot_<version>_amd64.deb; your next system update offers the newest again.

Desktop preview 0.1.35

Share your screen, not everything on it.

Every computer is on 0.1.35. The Mac build is signed and notarised, and Mac 0.1.14 updates itself. On Debian and Ubuntu, 0.1.34 and later update with your system updates.

New in 0.1.35. The new KithMoot icon, the turquoise and blue vortex, in your Dock, taskbar and app menu. Nothing else changes.

New in 0.1.34, for Linux. A .deb package for Debian, Ubuntu, Mint, Pop!_OS and their relatives, x64 and ARM64. It adds KithMoot's signed software source, so later versions arrive with your system updates, and an open KithMoot offers a restart when one has been installed. Your profile is never touched, and moving over from the tar.gz install keeps it.

New in 0.1.32. Sharing another app's window keeps your own preview, so you can draw on it again, and sharing KithMoot itself no longer shows the share inside itself. A redacted share is covered while another desktop slides in. The call controls are one row, with the rest under More, and two of your cameras show as two equal angles. A group link whose relays lost its invitation is found on yours, and a signer that does not answer is named as the problem.

Full release history
  • New in 0.1.35: the new KithMoot icon.
  • New in 0.1.34, for Linux: a .deb package that keeps itself up to date through your system's software updates, without touching your profile.
  • New in 0.1.32: sharing another app's window keeps your own preview, so you can draw on it again, and sharing KithMoot itself no longer shows the share inside itself. A redacted share is covered while another desktop slides in. The call controls are one row, with the rest under More, and two of your cameras show as two equal angles. A group link whose relays lost its invitation is found on yours, and a signer that does not answer is named as the problem.
  • New in 0.1.30: the person who made a room can add relays for everyone in it, from the room's relay settings. Members' apps add them and keep the relays they already use; nobody loses one.
  • New in 0.1.29: sharing the KithMoot window, or a whole screen, no longer shows the share inside itself. Your own preview pauses while you share anything but a single browser tab.
  • New in 0.1.29: your own share no longer takes over your view of the call; someone else's still does.
  • New in 0.1.29: chat stays in the window beside a wide share instead of being pushed off the right.
  • New in 0.1.29: the notes and buttons for your other device sit on one line above the call bar.
  • New in 0.1.29: the files panel puts the file picker first and tucks the choice of file server away once it is made.
  • New in 0.1.28: Hide my share covers the whole of what you are sharing and silences its sound until you press Show my share. The share keeps running, so coming back is instant.
  • New in 0.1.28: anything hidden, a box or a whole share, goes out as a pattern rather than plain black, which looked like a fault.
  • New in 0.1.28: closing the window no longer raises an error, and on Linux and Windows the app quits when you close it.
  • New in 0.1.27: on Linux, the Share an area frame and the boxes that hide part of the screen no longer stop answering once the pointer has crossed their middle.
  • New in 0.1.27: the Share an area frame says when it is not wholly on one screen, instead of closing when you press Start sharing.
  • New in 0.1.27: sharing a window starts even when its first picture is slow to arrive, and says so while it waits.
  • New in 0.1.27: Hide part of the screen adds another box each time you press it, and the button now says so.
  • New in 0.1.27: the smallest box is a little wider, so there is always somewhere to take hold of it.
  • New in 0.1.27: while part of the screen is hidden, the list of things to share says how many windows it has left out.
  • New in 0.1.27: on Linux, marks drawn on a shared area show inside the frame while Draw is on, and in the call window at any time.
  • New in 0.1.26: black out parts of your screen while you share it; the boxes stay black when you move between displays.
  • New in 0.1.26: rooms keep an encrypted copy of their history on this device, and give it back to a relay that has forgotten it.
  • New in 0.1.26: a slow, refusing or forgetful relay no longer holds up history or sets off a storm of reconnections. Relay settings say when a relay accepts chat and keeps none of it.
  • New in 0.1.26: your camera keeps you in the middle of your own picture.
  • New in 0.1.26: on a call from your phone and your computer, unmuting on the computer keeps your microphone on.
  • New in 0.1.26: sharing your whole screen no longer shows the share inside itself.
  • New in 0.1.26: when the far end starts again on a new session, the call answers it on a fresh connection.
  • New in 0.1.26: on Windows, the Share an area frame stays clickable and Move is reliable.
  • New in 0.1.26: on a Mac, cancelling a share is no longer reported as a Screen Recording problem.
  • New in 0.1.26: a group invitation reaches every relay before the connection closes.
  • New in 0.1.24: a room you have been in opens straight in, without asking for your name again.
  • New in 0.1.24: the start page keeps one shape as you resize the window, and shows Loading your rooms instead of the welcome screen while your sign-in loads.
  • New in 0.1.23: the start page lists your rooms by latest activity, with a preview, time, unread count and presence, and a menu on each row.
  • New in 0.1.23: Settings opens from the top bar, and unnamed rooms show as Untitled room.
  • New in 0.1.22: drag the divider between the call and the chat, or use the arrow keys; double-click resets it.
  • New in 0.1.22: the Speaking line leaves you out and names only other people.
  • New in 0.1.21: chat between agents no longer counts as unread, and messages addressed to an agent are counted separately from those for you.
  • New in 0.1.21: a relay that refuses or fails says what to do in plain words.
  • New in 0.1.21: the "Speaking:" label is readable in light theme, and Start call no longer appears twice.
  • New in 0.1.21: screen readers hear a sender's name, without their key, unless two people share a name.
  • New in 0.1.20: one tile size for every face, with gallery, speaker, screen and focus views.
  • New in 0.1.20: a "Speaking:" line naming who is talking; it is shown, not read aloud.
  • New in 0.1.20: a right-click menu with copy, paste and spelling, and shortcuts for microphone, camera and push to talk.
  • New in 0.1.20: the speaking outline survives Windows high contrast and follows your system's increase contrast setting.
  • New in 0.1.19: the default relays are nos.lol, relay.primal.net and nostr.mom. The relay we run is no longer among them.
  • New in 0.1.19: a Report abuse link, with the terms and privacy notice on the website.
  • New in 0.1.18: a call keeps going while you visit other rooms or go back to the rooms list.
  • New in 0.1.18: opening an old room with a long history no longer freezes the window, and a room that takes too long to open offers a way back.
  • New in 0.1.18: forget a room from the sidebar or the room switcher.
  • New in 0.1.18: turn off the mirrored view of your own camera on each device. What others see is unchanged.
  • New in 0.1.18: forwarded call media keeps decrypting after a room changes its key.
  • New in 0.1.17: on Linux, the Share an area frame no longer freezes after the pointer passes over its middle.
  • New in 0.1.16: Share an area, desktop notifications and unread badges work again on Linux and Windows. In 0.1.15 the app failed to load the part that connects it to your desktop, so all three disappeared.
  • New in 0.1.16: on Linux Wayland, Share an area opens a preview window. Choose a screen in the system dialog, drag the box around what to share, and only that box is sent. You can move the box while sharing and draw inside it. Ordinary screen sharing on Wayland goes straight from the system dialog, without a second KithMoot menu.
  • New in 0.1.15: incoming calls ring on every connected device with notifications enabled. Linux X11 gained Share an area with the movable crop frame.
  • New in 0.1.10: Chat and its composer fill wide desktop windows. The sharing frame has larger corner handles, a clear Move bar and stays in front of other windows. Drawing colours are identified once per person in a bottom legend that fades with their marks.
  • New in 0.1.10: cancelling the sharing-area chooser stops screen and audio tracks that arrive after cancellation. A timed-out relay connection now follows the existing retry path when the relay returns.
  • The Mac download is now Developer ID signed and notarised by Apple. Sustained drawing includes the latest segment-delivery fix.
  • Starting or stopping a screen share keeps sound on the device you chose. Listen here also works with your microphone and camera off.
  • Drawings are sent while you move your finger or mouse, rather than waiting until you lift it. Network delay still applies.
  • On Mac, Share an area opens a floating frame. Move it, resize it with any corner handle, then press Start sharing. With Draw off you can work with the apps underneath; with Draw on you can mark the shared area alongside other people.
  • Click an image attachment to expand it, view its actual size or pop it out into another window.
  • Desktop capture requests shared sound and includes the Mac audio permission description. Available sound sources still depend on your operating system and permissions.
  • Returning to Call from Chat on a phone keeps the call running.
  • Earlier in 0.1.8: background blur and replacement no longer report usage statistics to Google. The camera effects library we use had started sending them; we moved to a version without it, and the build now fails if it ever comes back.
  • If a background effect stops working, the people you are talking to see only your backdrop, or a full blur, never your room. A notice beside your picture says so, and the effect retries by itself.
  • A plain, even-coloured shirt is no longer partly replaced by the backdrop.
  • A phone sharing its screen upright is shown whole: the name placeholder for a person without a camera sits beside a share instead of on top of it.
  • A screen-sharing error clears once sharing works, and on a Mac it says how to fix the Screen Recording permission instead of “Invalid capture constraints”.
  • Earlier in 0.1.7: The cause of “I can see them but not hear them” is fixed: two ends of a call could settle on different arrangements without either noticing, and now they notice and put it right.
  • A call with every camera off is a small strip with names and controls, and chat keeps the window.
  • A person’s name no longer flashes as their joining name first, and a plain word is only highlighted as a mention when the sender actually mentioned that person. The @ picker inserts the name you can see.
  • Leave call is red wherever it appears.
  • Chat takes the whole window when nothing is beside it, and only becomes a side drawer while a call is showing something.
  • With nobody on a call the call area is one line, not an empty panel. The button says Start call, Join call or Leave call, whichever is true.
  • Leaving a call no longer flashes the join screen.
  • The projects list on the left can be hidden and shown.
  • 💯 is among the reactions.
  • Calls recover by themselves when a signal or a relay connection is lost, instead of leaving one direction silent.
  • A person who muted themselves shows “muted” on their tile. Someone you silenced shows “silenced for you”.
  • When two people share, each sits beside their own screen and both stay in view. Chat slides in and out.
  • “Pop out” on a shared screen now opens its own window.
  • Sea backgrounds, with fish, under “Hide what is behind you”.
  • Leaving and tidying a room removes your read position too.
When will I receive notifications?

Enable notifications in KithMoot and allow them in your operating system. Keep the app window open or minimised. Quitting stops delivery; closing the last Linux window quits the app. Quiet rooms only receive notifications while that room is open.

Notifications name the sender and room. Message text is opt-in. Linux icon badges depend on your launcher; some desktops need an extension. The Zen bell is app audio: mute it using its own switch when you want silence, including during an OS Focus mode.

What still needs testing?

The sharing area still needs physical checks for capture, resizing and drawing alignment. Linux X11 has not yet had a physical desktop run, and on Wayland nobody has yet checked that the system screen chooser appears once and that the far end sees the picture. Linux system audio is not captured. Physical iPhone and Mac checks are pending too.

How do I check my download?

Download SHA256SUMS.txt into the same folder as your archive. On macOS run shasum -a 256 KithMoot-0.1.35-mac-arm64.zip; on Linux run sha256sum kithmoot_0.1.35_*.deb or sha256sum KithMoot-0.1.35-linux-*.tar.gz; on Windows run Get-FileHash KithMoot-0.1.35-windows-x64.zip -Algorithm SHA256. Compare the result with the matching filename in the checksums file. Every earlier version's checksum is listed under Need a particular version. The .deb's later updates are checked by apt against the signed repository.
